GoldCoast Oceanfest, the multi award winning, family friendly Oceanside festival are stoked to announce Parkdean Resorts, the owners of Ruda and Croyde Beach as the lead sponsor for GoldCoast Oceanfest until 2018.
If you could bottle a beachside festival and pour it out each year against the backdrop of a sun-drenched Atlantic, then #Oceanfest16 might be just the brew to choose. It’s big enough to create a great party atmosphere, small enough not to be overwhelming. It blends a potentially intoxicating, eclectic and laid back mix of quality music, exhilarating surf, action packed sports, locally sourced food and family-friendly fun.
Parkdean have long been involved with the Oceanfest supporting numerous aspects of the production and now as headline sponsors their involvement in Devon’s coolest and longest running surf and music festival is even more enhanced. The partnership will see support by accommodating sponsors, athletes, musicians and media at Ruda Park. Parkdean will also remain sponsors of the established and hugely respected Beach Volleyball event delivered by the Academy of Beach Sports.
Parkdean Chief Executive, John Waterworth was delighted to extend the company’s involvement, commenting “To be able to support such a long standing community grassroots production such as GoldCoast Oceanfest, offers Parkdean the opportunity to bring an exciting event to our family holidaymakers whilst showcasing the fantastic beauty of Croyde making this sponsorship a great fit for us!”
This year, Parkdean shall be in the entertaining company of headline acts DJ Fresh, Sunset Sons and KT Tunstall for a memorable weekend of surf and music, whilst creating good family times, great music, keeping fit and looking after the environment.
Warren Latham, Director at GoldCoast Oceanfest said, “We are amped to have Parkdean’s huge sponsorship support, as we look toward this year and ahead to our 19th and 20th Oceanfest productions too.”
They’re coming back… we’d love you to come back as well and give the boys a massive midsummer welcome to their first festival headline show!
Check out the video for ‘Somewhere Maybe’ from Sunset Sons’ debut album ‘Very Rarely Say Die’ which was released TODAY
‘Somewhere Maybe’ is the perfect soundtrack to Spring; demonstrating Sunset Sons’ ability to pen explosive choruses with warm heartfelt vocals.
“We recorded Somewhere Maybe with our friend and sensei Jacquire King at the incredible Blackbird Studios in Nashville. He encouraged us to experiment and there was a feeling of something special and original in the studio when working with him,” says front man Rory Williams.
“Somewhere Maybe is a song about escapism. About just getting in the car and putting your foot down,” adds drummer Jed Laidlaw
Very Rarely Say Die – recorded between London, Nashville and their adopted hometown of Hossegor with Jacquire King (Kings of Leon) and James Lewis (Arctic Monkeys) – arrives amidst a 14 date UK and Ireland headline tour.
The Anglo-Aussie band have had a blinding past 12 months, which has seen them play over 20 summer festival dates, secure Radio 1 and Radio X support, and win over thousands of new fans, night after night opening up for Imagine Dragons – none too shabby for a bunch of four surfers who fell into music as a means to pay the bills just two years previously.
Sunset Sons came into being when Rory, Pete, Jed and Rob encountered each other whilst pursuing their love of surfing in the sleepy French beach town of Hossegor. A subsequent UK tour took the band not to the typical major city dates in London and Manchester, but out to the coastal surf towns of the UK including Thurso, Scarborough and Croyde.
It’s part and parcel of that same down-to-earth love for surfing and its no-nonsense lifestyle which keeps all four members of Sunset Sons still living by the sea in Hossegor, still more than a little bemused by their own success; “That was part of the deal” says Rory. “We couldn’t write the songs we do living in, say, London”.
True to form, as soon as the festival season was over, the band returned to Hossegor to finish recording Very Rarely Say Die.
Sunset Sons have just completed a UK and European Arena tour with Imagine Dragons and will soon embark on their own headline tour – the band have also been announced to headline GoldCoast Oceanfest in Devon on June 18.
“We’re really excited to get out and tour our debut album. We can’t wait for everyone to hear the tunes!” says frontman Rory.
We all like a bit of top class support.
A big shout out for Oceanfest Fridays support act, Fuse ODG. Yes the Urban Music Awards Best Afrobeats Artist, Fuse ODG, is in the Bay! He is from the ‘Off Da Ground’ family hence his surname ODG. Known for his energetic performances and his original and creative conceptual songs, Fuse reached the number one spot in the iTunes World Chart in late 2013, cementing his status as the first Ghanaian musician in history to achieve such a feat. Having since collaborated with Killbeatz, Wyclef Jean, and Sean Paul, Fuse ODG has, to date, cracked the Top 10 on four occasions. Listen out for sound waves.
Strutting their proud English roots into the GoldCoast Saturday mix is indie four-piece band Palma Violets, formed after a chance meeting around a campfire at the Reading festival. It brought together the enigmatic front pairing of Sam Fryar and the spectacularly-named Chilli Jesson. Keyboardist Peter Mayhew and drummer Will Doyle complete the line-up. Before their debut album, 180, they were snapped up by the legendary indie label Rough Trade (The Strokes, The Libertines) whilst also being christened Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record along with their single, Best Of Friends, voted NME’s track of the year. The release of their second album Danger In The Club was produced by John Leckie (who is the top of the producer pile, think everyone from John Lennon, The Fall, The Stone Roses to The Verve & Muse to name a few) and reverberates a renewed confidence and sense of self-identity. Bring it on down to the coast boys!
Welcome to Havana on our Funday Sunday down at GoldCoast Oceanfest! We have watched them over the years and they are the unstoppable infectious force of nature that is ‘The Cuban Brothers’ – their unrivalled funk and soul review blends sexy, soulful music with jaw-dropping b-boy action and riotous comedy. Despite much inappropriate touching, the band’s delirious rhythms, lightning wit, and gentle ribbing of world famous artists has seen them personally chosen to play by Elton John, Robbie Williams and Richard Branson. Off stage, their acclaimed debut album, Yo Bonita!’, which took the skittish dynamics of their live show into the studio, and TV & film appearances, including Ill Manors, Cuban Fury and Sunshine on Leith continue to expose them to new audiences worldwide.
Folks, we said that like a good El Nino swell it would come thick and fast. We are stoked to announce our headline acts for our 18th consecutive midsummer production of GoldCoast Oceanfest on 17,18,19 June.
First up on 17th June, our Friday headliner needs no introduction, it’s DJ Fresh. How Love Begins – the new single with High Contrast and Dizzee Rascal is tearing up the sound waves having been first played on BBC Radio 1 show by Annie Mack as her hottest record and the track is released today (5th Feb) on UK iTunes. The man has over 2.5 million record sales, two number 1 singles and a further two top 6 singles to his name including Hot Right Now featuring Rita Ora and Gravity with the Brit Award winning Ella Eyre.
Paddling in on Saturday 18th it’s a huge GoldCoast shout out to Sunset Sons. Having opened for Imagine Dragons across their huge 30-date UK and European arena tour through Autumn 2015, Sunset Sons have announced they will back their album debut with a sizeable 14-date UK tour. We feel a strong swell of support as things are definitely going to be happening for these brilliant surfing musicians. The boys have announced the release of their debut album ‘Very Rarely Say Die’ for 1st of April 2016. You would be a fool to miss that!
Taking off on Sunday 19th June we are truly delighted to share the beauty and melancholy of KT Tunstall. This internationally acclaimed singer songwriter and musician originates from Scotland and has no less than four albums, 4 million sales, one Ivor Novello and one Brit Award under her belt. Such a talented lass from north of the border is a perfect fit for our laid back Sunday vibe.
