GoldCoast Oceanfest Sports Hall of Fame
Both these athletes happen to be local, both ‘Sporting Champions’, and now both inducted into the GoldCoast Oceanfest Sports Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Nick Thorn (Big Boy Paddle) of Woolacombe and Denise Austen (Beach VolleyBall) of Croyde, pictured below with event directors Shaun and Warren Latham.
It is no coincidence that both winners also run successful businesses that reflect their lifestyle and sports influences. Denise runs the Academy of Beach Sports in Croyde Bay, focusing on developing both the professional and grass roots levels of the volleyball and beach soccer fraternity. Nick Thorn Enterprises comprises of lifeguard training and surfingcoaching, corporate events and his successfull surf school operation. The surf school was a natural progression for Nick, combining his international success in competitive surf life saving with his professional experience in beach lifeguarding, his ability as a surfer and his love of teaching.
Denise and Nick are deeply committed to the next generation of high performance athletes and, whilst we aim for the 2012 Olympics in London and beyond, North Devon is very lucky to have retained the services of two such experienced and qualified folk to offer their expertise right here on a local level. So whilst we congratulate our inaugural inductees into the ‘Hall of Fame’and wish them both well in their future ventures, we eagerly await the new wave of achievers, hoping it is GoldCoast who identifies the next generation of ‘stars’ willing to pick up the baton and make a name for themselves and hopefully bigger impact beyond these shores.
